Chen Shaoxiong (Shantou, China, 1962-2016)
Chen Shaoxiong was one of the most famous Chinese conceptual artists. In his work he shows that the large amount of visual information that a person is used to absorbing can cause a wrong image of reality. The viewer thinks he sees an ordinary street scene, but in the meantime it is a model with elements of the street scene that influence the image. The viewer is "punished" for his prejudice. Eeverything in the city is temporary, he argues, the streets, the buildings, the shopping centers, the stations, the airport, the trees, the traffic signs and even the crowds. He wants to capture these moving elements and put them back in de "moving" city.
Chen Shaoxiong studied at Guangzhou Art School. He co-founded the famous Big Tail Elephant Group. He lived and worked in Guangzhou. He died of cancer in November 2016.
