Eliza Kopec (The Netherlands, 1960)

In the 1980s, the Polish Eliza Kopec graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. In her graphic work, Kopec often poses portraits of people alongside colorful flowers and other decorative elements. She borrows these from her daily environment as well as from magazines and (art) literature, such as the portrait of Rogier van der Weijden shown here.
Original and characteristic of the work of Eliza Kopec is the combination of intaglio (etching) with relief printing (linocut). She uses the etching for a detailed and refined drawing of her subject. The linocut, on the other hand, is ideally suited for rendering more abstract and decorative visual elements.

Kopec is a creditable graphic artist and it is not without reason that he received an honorable mention at the Dutch Graphic Art Prize 1992. Nowadays, however, Kopec is more concerned with painting geometric abstract paintings.
